International Students
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) — CPT allows our international students to accept practical (internship) training after their first two semesters of study at Rice. MEECON students may choose to work part-time for their required ECON 699- Internship course. CPT authorization is the responsibility of the student and requires no action on the part of the hiring organization. The approval time for CPT is usually 5-10 business days and students may commence working after they receive authorization.
  • Occupational Practical Training (OPT) — OPT is a 12-month work authorization that allows our MEECON students who have graduated to gain practical work experience related to their major field of study. Rice’s Master of Energy Economics is considered a STEM-designated program which allows our graduates to receive an additional 24-month extension. Students gain a total of 36 months for practical work experience in their STEM field.
    • Student Responsibilities — Students can apply for OPT as early as 90 days before the program completion date in August. OPT can be granted to the student with or without an offer of employment. Additional steps and guidelines can be found here.
    • Employer Responsibilities There is no cost to the employer. Rice’s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) processes the student’s STEM OPT recommendation. Students must have their EAD card in hand prior to beginning work
